After six years he was caught, and sentenced to four twelve year sentences to run concurrently in some of America s most brutal prisons. He was sent to solitary, tortured by guards, and after he began a letter writing campaign to publicize the brutality of prison life, he was targeted by the warden for further abuse. One day the guards beat him, stripped him naked, strapped him down spread eagle, and urinated on him as punishment. Keep writing, Lawton, said one guard as he walked away. After Lawton served his term, he was asked by a friend to talk to the friend s son, a boy who clearly was headed for a life of crime. Lawton vividly told the boy about what prison life really was about, and after a couple of weeks the boy s father said to Lawton, You ought to make this your life s work. I don t know what you told him, but he s a different kid. Since then Lawton has dedicated his life to working with America s teens and young adults, telling them the truth about prison life, what they will lose, avoiding and dissolving bad associations, helping them to turn their lives around. About the Author
Lawrence S. Brown (Ph.D, Princeton University) is a Senior Lecturer and coordinator for the general chemistry for engineers course at Texas A&M University. He received his B.S. in 1981 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his M. A. in 1983 from Princeton University. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow from 1986-88 at the University of Chicago. His research activities include active learning and use of technology in education and integration of chemistry with other subjects in the engineering curriculum. His current efforts are in (i) continued development of the CHEM 107 curriculum, (ii) improving uses of technology in chemical education, and (iii) incorporation of active learning strategies into large classroom settings. These efforts are brought together with the Foundation Coalition, an NSF-supported effort to implement a new model for the education of engineering students. Larry also monitors the CHEM 107 course for Texas A&M's campus in Qatar in the Middle East and has traveled there numerous times.

Tom Holme (Ph.D, Rice University) is a chemistry professor at Iowa State University and Director of the ACS Examinations Institute. He is active in both computational chemistry and chemical education research and has been involved with the general chemistry for engineers course at both Iowa State and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Some of his recent publications include: "Designing Chemistry Practice Exams for Enhanced Benefits: An Instrument for Comparing Performance and Mental Effort Measures," (Karen Knaus, Kristen Murphy and Thomas Holme), Journal of Chemical Education, 2009, in press; "Nanoscience Items for Standardized Exams in the Undergraduate Chemistry Curriculum" (Thomas Holme), in Nanoscale Science and Engineering Education: Issues, Trends and Future Directions, ed., A.E. About the Author

William J. Chambliss, professor of sociology at The George Washington University, was a critical sociological theorist whose research has ranged broadly from studies of law creation and the legal system to participant observation studies of juvenile gangs, organized crime, policing, and the impact of social movements on political and economic change. He served as president of the American Society of Criminology and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. He has received numerous awards for his research and teaching, including the prestigious Edwin H. Sutherland Award from the American Society of Criminology, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association, the Bruce Smith Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the PASS Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sociology of Law Section of the American Sociological Association. He has authored and edited over 35 books in sociology, criminology and criminal justice and numerous articles in social science journals.

Daina S. Eglitis is an associate professor of sociology and international affairs and director of the undergraduate program in the Department of Sociology at The George Washington University. Her research highlights sociological dimensions of change in the post-communist world, with a particular focus on stratification, poverty, and gender. She has been the recipient of Fulbright, IREX, and Open Society awards and is the author of several articles and a book on post-communist social change. I meant to select the first chapter but Princess Jellyfish #9 was also a good place to start since I've watched the anime and it is at a meaty part of the story. I like the mix of humor and poignancy. I will be checking out more of this series.

The last book of the series. It's bittersweet like saying goodbye to some friends you've enjoyed having around. This is my one of my favorite manga series next to Honey and Clover, and Orange.

I think this is a cute story that every closet otaku will realate too.

Love this series! Worth every penny!

So, I love this manga there's nothing wrong with that. BUT it's freshly printed and someone put a sticker around the edge of the book and removing it, it ripped away the drawing on the page and ripped the front of the book. So pretty sad and upset about this

Stone Soup is classic Children's Literature, still relevant in today's world. I read it when I was a child and still use it in my own classroom. The theme involves giving to others in need, and how our perspective about giving can change, depending on circumstances. Giving to others usually brings its own rewards. Three soldiers are passing through a town during wartime, needing food and shelter. The townspeople are not receptive or forthcoming with food. The visitors employ a little reverse psychology and invite the townspeople to help them make, and share, stone soup. As their curiosity gets the best of them, the townspeople share what they have and the entire town enjoys a festive evening of food and dance. They are offered the finest beds in town for the evening. They leave the next morning with the townspeople's blessing, remarking, "It's all in the knowing how!

I have loved this story since I heard Captain Kangaroo read it on TV when I was a child. And how exciting that it had the same graphics as the ones I remember! What a timeless story about setting aside grievances to work together for the greater good.

I was able to offer this story from my grade school years as a gift for my niece's expected little boy. I think Captain Kangaroo read me this story. The story helps us understand the miracle of the Loaves and Fishes by showing a village of scared people sharing their hoarded food and by doing so ending up with more than enough for everyone. They all experience the uplifting of the a celebration in well done, familiar illustrations.

Great story! I remember reading this as a kid. I am using it to teach during the week before Thanksgiving and then we made "Stone Soup" pozole style lol. The kids have been loving it!

When I was young I listened to Captain Kangaroo read this story live on TV. I remembered it from way back because I thought the story was very interesting tail of human nature and curiosity. I would recommend this book to anyone who has little ones. They will find it to be a good story of human nature. Also not a bad read for the adults.

I've loved this book since I was little and Captain Kangaroo used to read it! This year it is going in the grandchildren's easter basket. I do wish they would re do it into more of a picture book.

A favorite with all 6 children in our family. As an adult, I enjoy the possibility of a neolithic practice lurking among the threads of this tale. Stone age man heated his soup with stones from the fire tossed into the pot which brought the liquid to a boil almost immediately. . Who knows how far back this "traditional French folk tale" really goes!

Popular outdoor author Bass (Lost Grizzlies, LJ 11/1/95) returns to his home turf in the Yaak Valley of northwestern Montana, also the setting for his Winter Notes from Montana (LJ 2/15/91). As a resident of that remote area for over ten years, Bass seems to have been accepted by the few locals who populate the canyon. Much of this work concerns his attempt to protect the remaining wilderness of the area, a vital corridor for genetic replenishment of wildlife from Canada. As he ponders the question of the worth of such a place, Bass writes countless letters to anyone he feels may aid in stopping the construction of the roads that facilitate logging in the area. Although bitterness occasionally surfaces in his account, the author remains hopeful as he descibes attempts to forge alliances with diverse groups of loggers, hunters, and other residents. In the process of reconciling his artistic side (writing) with his scientific training as a geologist, he once again paints a marvelous portrait of life in an area of rugged beauty. An urgent plea by a longtime resident to preserve one of the lower 48's remaining wilderness areas. Nestled where Idaho, Montana, and Alberta, Canada, meet, the Yaak Valley--the name means ``arrow'' in Kootenai--is a treasure vault of old-growth pine, spruce, and Douglas fir. It is also a prime target for the logging industry, which now seeks to open the Yaak to clearcut logging. Bass (The Lost Grizzlies, 1995, etc.) is scandalized by this possibility, especially inasmuch as the US Forest Service subsidizes such logging ``to the tune of one or two billion dollars per decade'' and ``timber companies working on public lands in the West continue to post record quarterly profits for their stockholders''--precisely because of the government's largess. This well-written, impatient, often polemical book urges that the Yaak, and other wild places, be set aside from economic development, and Bass's program is modest: ``I want,'' he writes, ``the last few roadless areas in this still-wild valley to remain that way.'' He also celebrates the power of wilderness to inspire the meditative, simple life: ``I practice going slow,'' he says, ``at a pace that can be sustained. I practice looking around at things.'' He also introduces us to neighbors who have found a special solace in the deep woods. Bass argues that most Montanans and Idahoans oppose any further destruction of their backyard wilderness and demonstrates how important old-growth forest is to the health of the entire ecosystem. Much of this will be familiar territory to readers who know Bass's work, for he has written about the Yaak before in books like Winter (1991) and The Ninemile Wolves (1992).
