This book argues that Europe’s archives of self-understanding are haunted by the traces of Black radical resistance. Just as Europe’s economy came to depend upon the raw materials, markets, and labor it secured from the colonies, European culture came to be based on fantasies and phobias derived from the unruly and unmanageable aftershocks of colonial violence and counter-insurgency. Rather than assert that European nationalist and abolitionist discourses are on the side of emancipatory movements, the book shows the limits of the promise of that discourse, and the continuation of those limitations that makes the continued pursuit of that promise a questionable activity. This book does not wish to salvage the emancipatory promises of European discourse, but considers the more difficult and uncomfortable question of why emancipatory movements represented the struggles of anticolonial and radical blackness the way they did.

First, I won't spoil the story, but I hated the ending. And not only because it was a pound of bitter and a dash of sweet. The author keep me reading out of fascination at the main character's resolve and methodical planning--the execution of that plot is masterful. The problem is the only thing I found I came to care about the author destroys with the ending, and it seemed completely forced and unmotivated. The love interest goes from a complex character to a shallow Hollywood trope just so the main character doesn't "get away with it". I defend this opinion because it's written in third person omniscient--we know her thoughts page after page, nothing is hidden. I could list many details of why, like the relationship with her father for instance, but I promised to not ruin the story. I simply expect more for my time spent than legal cleverness, but if you don't then the machinations are interesting.

I cannot give a full opinion of this novel at this time, as I have just started on it. Thus far, as my reading have progressed, I am enjoying the way the story unfolds. No dull moment, particularly after the subject met his big setback, where I had paused. I am also reading A Time to Kill concurrently. This works for me, odd as it may sound to other readers. There are at least 8 titles on my desk and w/ a batch more coming, I either keep up or left em sit idly. For those who have been ignoring The Partner for whatever reasons, have another look..Grisham is a natural storyteller. • A novel is nothing but a mode to provide entertainment. Let the 'author/book' critics delight hearing themselves - they need to earn a living. Buy what serves your fancy, listen to your drummer. • I intend to update my comments, for those interested.

While I'm an avid reader of John Grisham, this book was quite disappointing. I thought it was going along well and then the wrap up at the end of the book left much to be desired. It was terrible. The pieces didn't come together or make any sense and then the reader is left questioning the reason of it all.I'm very disappointed in this book. It was like he had someone come in and finish it for him who hadn't even read the book. Very disappointed.

I enjoy John Grisham's books. Having a brother in law who is a lawyer helps me appreciate his legal background even more.This book focuses on a lawyer who has stolen $90 million dollars from his former firm and is captured hiding in Brazil. But why did he do it? Why would a partner steal the money and run? The story unfolds from there set in Biloxi, Mississippi.Overall this was a good read. The very ending was somewhat tough but a good read nonetheless.

I loved this novel from beginning to end but the ending made me want to scream!! I won't give it away but I started suspecting something fishy about 2/3 way through. But regardless, a great read, as John Grisham novels always are. Can't believe I hadn't read it yet! Worth your time. Couldn't stop reading, as usual.

In my reviews I don't tell anything about the story if I can help it. I just like to say what I liked or disliked, and with this book there isn't much to criticize. Probably one of Grisham's best. I would highly recommend this novel. I could feel the outcome as it drew nearer and as I feared , the climax was disappointing; for me anyway. I would recommend reading this story just for the ending. You may be surprised.

I really debated how to star this review. I liked this book, and read it very quickly. I was waiting for the Grisham twist at the end of the book, and did figure it out. If it had ended there, I would have probably given it 4 or 5 stars. But, he seemed to feel he needed to add a second one that was disappointing and unneeded. Overall, the book was too good not to recommend, but you'll have to judge the ending for yourself.

This legal thriller reads more like a detective novel where the "hero" is a flawed, compromised character who plots his schemes with masterly precision and has an elaborate design for a life of untold wealth and comfort if all goes well. Danilo Silva/Patrick Lanigan, chameleon par excellence, fleeces his law firm of $90 million then conceals the fortune via elaborate deposit-and-withdrawal transactions in various bank accounts around the world. Only Lanigan and his partner, an attractive Brazilian attorney, know where the money is, which is also being sought by the F.B.I and unsavory professionals hired by his former colleagues. The story has several twists and turns, implausible situations and unsympathetic characters but the novel has a flavor all its own and is suspenseful to the end. The payoff, in its own way, is just and deserved, and Grisham has a solid winner with this one. The unabridged audiobook is expertly narrated by Frank Muller.

this book was required reading for an education class i was taking. It outlines in simple statements why parents should immediately start reading aloud to their babies as soon as they are born. my grandchildren were able, at a very young age, to turn the pages to get to another part of the book. many young children who are not exposed to books, are unable to even turn pages.this book taught me to purchase children's books that included great artwork/illustrations, something colorful to catch the eye and delight of the children, who are to little to read but love looking at something colorful.in addition, this book points out to be animated when reading. if the character in the book is whispering, then you whisper. if they are shouting, then raise your voice (but not so loud as to scare the child). buy one for yourself and every person you know who is pregnant, a new mother or father, and especially grandparents, who have so much influence in developing a child's interest in reading.

A must read for a new parents. Without realizing it my daughter could read when she started kindergarten and is an avid reader at 11 years old. Without wanting to play 'baby olympics' because she's is certainly no child prodigy and this book isn't about getting ahead at all I highly recommend it. There was a marked difference in my daughters speech development, attention span, ability to read at a very you age, than her peers who had not been read aloud too as much. For me .. Reading aloud from a very young age gave her these skills and I think it's fundamental in child development. If everyone read aloud to their kids from as early as possible, as much as possible the world would have a much higher literacy rate (in my humble opinion).

This book is mediocre. In order to not be disappointed, you should read this book and think of it as kind of a memoir of Mem's educational development and experience as a parent. She talks a lot about her experiences with her one and only daughter, and treats these experiences as broad facts, giving the allure that if you just read to your child--any child--they will become fluent readers naturally. She bases this off of the fact that her own daughter learned to read without any instruction by the second week of kindergarten. Well, as a parent of multiple children and a background in education, I am here to tell you that reading to your child gives them every advantage in learning early literacy skills, but it is a rare occasion when this is the ONLY tool necessary for them to learn to read independently. Mem's child was one of those lucky "exceptions," and in this book it appears that she is trying to make a generalization that this could be the case for almost all children. Another factor I do not like is that Mem seems to be under the impression that because her child learned to read so early, everything she did was correct. At one point she says that reading to a tiny infant is unnecessary, because she didn't start reading to her daughter until she was around 10 months. Once again, a generalization. I have researched the topic extensively, and there is much research to support the benefits of reading to your child even before birth.Additionally, a lot of the "scientific research" Mem mentions has been said before (she did not conduct and studies herself), and most of us interested in this book have probably read enough on the topic to know everything covered. In my humble opinion, Mem "toots her own horn" quite a bit, and uses this book as a platform to draw attention to her children's books (which my children and I do adore).Don't get me wrong--this is a quick and easy read, and can give a layperson with no prior knowledge a good overview of why reading to your child is important. Even though my review sounds quite negative, I really did enjoy reading this book. I just want you, as a consumer, to know what you are getting, and to be critical of Mem's "facts" that are based on limited personal experience.

"A terrific book matters to us as human beings....If it has affected us profoundly, one way or another--to laughter or tears, horror or delight, disgust or dismay, fascination or fright." So writes Mem Fox in her incomparable "Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever."But it's not the book alone that changes the lives of our children. It is the act of sharing and sharing completely, totally, and doing it with gusto and fun, with laughter and tears, horror and delight--well, she said that before.But listen to this: "If every adult caring for a child read aloud a minimum of three stories a day to the children in their lives, we could probably wipe out illiteracy within one generation" (12). Now the scary part: "[T]he crucial connections that determine how clever, creative, and imaginative a child will be are already laid down by the time that child turns one" (14). Reading aloud to a child and engaging in conversation about the story does so many things: teaches words, values, ideas, concentration, problem solutions, self-expression, thought.Fox tells us that children need to hear a thousand stories read aloud before they learn to read for themselves. That's three stories a day for one year, not counting the three or more prior to school. Ideally those three stories should be one favorite book, one familiar book, and one new book. She avidly advocates reading the same favorite book over and over to teach the rhythm and structure of language. Read it until the child reads it.The most important reason we should read regulary to our children is to meet the most important reason of all: children need to know above all that they are loved by their parents. Reading as little as 15 minutes a day will create this bond of talking and sharing that creates this language bond.My favorite story Fox tells is this one concerning her own child Chloe (Note: the Foxes are Australian). During a picnic before her mum had unpacked the picnic basket, Chloe asked about the "afters" (dessert). Mum replied they had to eat first. "Well, one must sustain oneself," she said in a six-year-old huff.I laughed and laughed at that. Reading together creates a private family bond, the Foxes from Winnie the Pooh, source of the sustaining line. Chloe's father, on occasion, had eaten all the chocolate and responded with "Well, one must sustain oneself" line. Chloe picked it up, knowing its meaning and its source.Fox includes so much important information, including how to read aloud. Body position, using our eyes and facial expressions, making that eye contact, using vocal variety, and general animation. Reading aloud is an art form!She gives three secrets concerning the magic of reading: print, language, and general knowledge and how to make the three come together. What does she think of phonics? Her chapter title says it all: "Phokissing on Fonix." Her special chapter on Boys and Reading explains the utter necessity of a father reading to his children.Bottom line: This is a fantastic manual in learning how to read aloud, what to read aloud, why to read aloud, but above all--to read aloud, interact, share, discuss, enjoy!
